It’s Monday December 14th - we have 11 shopping days until Christmas. This is when it starts to get pretty hairy, right? This past weekend ushered in a wave of holiday parties, and this week will be still more: office parties, school holiday pageants, friends' gatherings and festivities galore. My palms are sweating just thinking about everything I haven’t done, but on top of the usual frenetic Holiday madness, this year I am in the midst of organizing for our family to go away on a Holiday. Far. Out of the country far. Like out of this continent. We leave next week for a 12 day gorgeous, massive, once in a lifetime family trip, to God’s country - South Africa.
The prep work for a vacation like this with young children is not for the faint of heart. An 18 hour plane ride means a lot of planning by mom for just the right amount of activities: books, games, movies and the like. Then there is the extensive packing list with unique climate considerations, and specific clothing selections for the safari portion right down to the color. And finally, there is the health bit, which began months ago with all of our vaccinations. But one of the biggest pieces for me personally has been figuring out how I am going to keep my sweat schedule up whilst on this sabbatical. I wrote in the past about the angst and trepidation I have felt about going away from my usual fitness routine for a few days - spring break, summer vacations, winter break, etc. The old me would be waking up in the middle of the night freaking out about where and how I was going to work out on Safari. But this time, I am much calmer. And I know it is because I am prepared.
Now some of you may be rolling your eyes like “Susan, come on, can’t you just not work out for those 12 days? Is it really going to kill you?” No, of course it won’t kill me, but it has become such a part of my daily life that just like anything else, I feed on and off of it. When I don’t sweat, I just don’t feel as great! At this point, I’m not doing it because i need to lose weight, or “stay in shape” or not gain those 3lbs on holiday. I am not even doing it because I love it. I am doing it because I truly believe sweat is imperative for a healthy life and I know it is imperative for me.
So how am I prepared? I am keeping it simple. I decided to pack a mini “Go” bag. In it? I have 2 "booty bands" from Barry’s Bootcamp, 2 resistance bands, a jump rope, and a list of short, easy workouts I can do without any equipment. I am also including a couple boxes of my favorite protein bars, (which I will be hard pressed to find in the middle of the bush), and a box of my favorite pre-workout powder! I am lucky, most of the places we are staying do have a gym, but in the event they didn’t or I can’t get to them, I still can get my sweat on. If you happen to be traveling this holiday, even if it isn't as far as Africa, when you are organizing your suitcase, and packing for your family, don't forget some of your fitness essentials! They will keep you in a healthy rhythm while you're away, and they may also help keep you sane! I look forward to posting from Africa and sharing some of the gorgeous things I see, and also some of the ways I am keeping up my sweat.
