Ahhh September! The month has always been a time for new beginnings. Our kids are going back to school, most of us are (or soon will be!) experiencing cooler temperatures, and it is the end of summer. It is the ushering in of a crisp, new, fresh start. In many ways this time of year is similar to the New Year, where we are reviewing what we have done thus far this year, and looking forward to what we would like to achieve during these next four months.
I’m going to challenge you to start something this September - something healthy for yourself. Whether it’s trying something new, something for which you haven’t had the time, or perhaps the guts, to try yet - or whether it’s following through on an existing fitness game plan and sticking to it. Today is September 14, You have 102 days until Christmas. You would be surprised at what you can accomplish in 102 days!
A few years ago, I set out to lose 35 lbs. I started with a goal at the beginning of the summer, of 15 lbs by Labor Day, and I achieved it. On the nose! During those 3 months, it was not easy. I had to change my entire lifestyle! I was radically altering my eating habits, and beginning a new, rigorous exercise plan. It was like driving a sports car and going from 0-60 mph as fast as I could. The way I saw it, I was 42 - and I didn’t feel like I had a lot of time to waste. For me, it was now or never. I had witnessed firsthand, and also through friends around me, that with each year, it became harder and harder to lose weight. It was "go time" that summer of 2012 for me, and I approached it with a passionate determination and desperate sense of urgency.
Since then, I have had other goals, and I have tried to apply that same energy to them. You may not have 35 lbs to lose, but maybe you want to start eating better, leaner. Perhaps you have a personal record at the gym that you want to beat. Maybe you want to run a long-distance race. When we get to be a certain age, we are so full of deadlines around us, for our children, our work, our spouses… that we don’t realize we haven’t set any for ourselves personally. When we are young, we set personal goals and deadlines all the time. It becomes a very different game when we are older. Life has a funny way of moving at warp speed - you can wake up and realize that “thing” you said you’d do “this year” or “some day”, never got done. It’s not that you don’t have the ability or desire to do it, it’s just that other things which have real deadlines attached to them happen, and your personal “some day” goal was pushed aside.
So let’s do this together: Pick something you want deep in your gut to achieve by the December holidays. Now set up little checkpoints on your calendar along the way. Every few weeks measure your progress. Look at it this way: it’s one less New Year’s Resolution to make! You don’t have to wait until January to make healthy changes. Strong bodies and strong minds are a function of passionate determination, a desperate sense of urgency, and a commitment to consistency. You can do it! You deserve it for you.
