Goal tracking, making progress, having resolve, making resolutions. January is the Monday of the months , and in so many ways, the most serious of them all. We come back from our holidays rested, recharged, and super-focused on what we want to achieve for the year. The gyms and fitness studios are humming, packed with hopeful, sweaty, intense bodies, all going after their goals with renewed fire. It is amazing to see, and inspiring to be around. We are in control of our destiny! Taking the reins to our lives! On a mission to attaining our goal with our defined plans in place! Then… ultimately, it happens. Something or someone falls out of place, an unforeseen circumstance, glitch or delay occurs, and our best laid plans are stalled, perhaps derailed, or at the very least slightly altered in a way which we on the surface at least, view as a setback.
So many times you will hear me say, you have to be single-mindedly focused on your goal to achieve it. I truly believe this, especially if it is a major lifestyle change, strength gain, weight-loss, body transformation. Really, anything worthwhile in life requires sacrifice, hard work, and a mindset which prioritizes it over anything else. Except, of course, the Universe. So before I start losing you, let me just explain what I mean. We can have all of the best plans and determination in the world, but we don’t always have all the answers or know the best ways to get there. We may think we do, and that’s important - because possessing self-confidence is one of the most important traits to succeeding. But, there are other ways of getting not only where you want to be, but perhaps even further, if you allow yourself to be open and to listen to the Universe.
Call it what you want, but we all have have those times in our lives where we look back on our day and think, “Wow, something or someone was looking out for me and I see why this happened”. What I am saying, is apply that same attitude to your fitness goals or any goal for that matter - and try not to get rattled by what may on the surface, appear to be a setback.
You hear professional athletes many times talk about how being sidelined with an injury for a season forced them to work on other parts of their lives, and how that time provided immeasurable growth otherwise not achievable. If you stay open and in tune with what is happening with your body and with the energies around you, you will find that your goals not only unfold for you, but that you discover other tremendous benefits, or maybe even “better” goals in the process.
Our lives are not a straight line, we do not have a manual which details the order and sequence of installing parts and programs in order to produce a perfect finished product. Rather, our lives are messy, sometimes chaotic, full of twists, turns, rejections, delays, obstacles, and reversals. We still reach our goals, not necessarily in spite of these things, but quite possibly because of. Learn to relish the imperfect, learn to love the journey and the ride to get there. Wherever “there” may be for you. The beautiful part about having resolve, setting goals, and working to achieve them, is what we discover about who we are during the process. Get in touch with the Universe in 2016, and get in touch with that strong, resilient, badass person hidden inside of you. Reach for the stars, I hope you catch them all.
